Details: WRONGFUL TERMINATION/ DEMOTION: Employment law is complex and the area of termination / demotion has many nuances. California utilizes the "at will" employment doctrine meaning an employer is free to terminate or demote an at-will employee with or without cause. There are, however, a variety of limitations upon an employer. These range from statutory protections for persons coming back from family or medical leave, to employees who make complaints about the safety of a work environment or inappropriate actions of a co-worker or supervisor (i.e. harassment/discrimination).

Failure to comply with these statues may result in severe financial penalties for an employer to include the potential of combating a costly class action.

An employer cannot terminate, demote or otherwise make a work environment so hostile because of an employee's race, sex, age, sexual orientation, religion or any number of other protected areas.
